Responses to Change

Studies of individual reactions to change, show that our responses can be positive or negative.  Regardless of whether we look forward to change or fear it, when we have particular expectations of change and these fail to materialise this can feel disruptive and throw us out of balance.

It is at these points of discomfort with change that we show signs of resistance.

Resistance to Change?

The term resistance to change can be misleading.  People do not naturally resist change, what they do resist is the loss of control in their lives that major change sometimes presents.

Resistance to change represents the individual’s resistance to the implications of the change process.  These implications could be the ambiguity they face or the loss of something familiar.
